Michael Cohen, PhD

 

Dr. Michael Cohen is a developmental psychologist and the President of the Michael Cohen Group LLC.

Michael is currently Principal Investigator for the U.S. Department of Education Ready to Learn Media Grant, focused on the use of media to engender disadvantaged children’s early literacy acquisition. In addition, he authored A Child's Life: Learning, Literacy and The Media, which was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education and PBS for the 2005 Ready to Learn Summit.

Dr. Cohen’s 30 years of experience in education includes an ongoing involvement, from multiple perspectives, with No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The range of Michael’s activities with regard to NCLB comprise: informing the core and ancillary curriculum; identification of appropriate measures and outcomes; development of innovative experimental designs and methodologies; and explorations of the relationship of student health, well-being and academic performance. He has a particular interest in mental health and student outcome.

His interest in mental health, crisis, trauma and education combined with his expertise in the field of children and media led to his role in New York City’s post-9/11 recovery. Dr. Cohen counseled Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on the effects of trauma in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks as well as New York City School Chancellor Harold Levy. Dr, Cohen was the principal investigator of the seminal study “The Mental Health Impact of the World Trade Center Attack on New York City School Children.”

Michael serves on executive boards for the U.S. National Child Labor Committee, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR). He taught at the Yale School of management and the Children’s Study Center at City University of New York (CUNY). He holds a PhD in psychology from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Minda Frank, MA

 

Minda Frank is Executive Vice President and Managing Director of MCG’s Research and Consulting practice. Her professional interest and expertise lies in the impact of attachment styles on interpersonal communications.

Before joining MCG, Minda was Senior Vice President for Research International, where she helped develop and test a number of the company’s proprietary research techniques. As senior member of the organization, her research focus was primarily in the areas of strategic communications development and planning.

Prior to her tenure at Research International, Minda lived in London, where she was Vice President of Bozell Global Group. In that capacity, she oversaw all research and planning for the agency world wide, serving a broad range of international corporations. Minda began her research career with Dr. Cohen at KRC Research and Consulting in New York.

Minda graduated summa cum laude from Eckerd College with a Bachelor of Science in experimental psychology, and holds an MA in psychology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research. She is currently a doctoral candidate in social psychology. A native English speaker, Minda is fluent in Spanish.

Martha Hadley, PhD

Martha Hadley PhD is Executive Vice President and Managing Director of MCG’s Ready To Learn grant activities. She received her doctorate in Developmental Psychology from the City University of New York, and has completed Postdoctoral training in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at NYU.

Martha has done applied research since the 1980's, and has occupied management positions in research teams at The Lab for Comparative Human Cognition, KRC Research and Consulting, Bank Street College Research Division and the Center for Children and Technology, part of EDC. Her academic experience includes teaching research methods Bank Street College, and clinical theory, gender studies and aspects of developmental psychology at Hampshire College and in the graduate program at Smith College School for Social Work.

As an Executive Vice President for KRC Research Company she worked with corporate, not-for-profit and political clients designing and directing studies that provided understandings and action-oriented strategic implications. She has continued to do clinical work in her New York City private practice as well as in a community mental health facility in Western MA. The thread that weaves through her work in different professional venues is her interest in unconscious, interpersonal and cognitive processes as they are shaped in and by social or cultural environments. She has long been interested in gender studies and is currently the Executive Editor of the journal Studies in Gender and Sexuality.

Jenny Lam

 

Jenny Lam is Executive Vice President and Managing Director at the Michael Cohen Group, and serves as operating officer of the firm’s RTLP practice.

Previously, Jenny headed up Disney Educational Productions (DEP), Disney’s primary channel to the K-12 schools market, the company’s division dedicated to the creation and distribution of premium quality educational media content and tools.

Before joining DEP, Jenny was Creative Consultant for a variety of companies involved in media, the arts, and education, including Universal Studios, Scholastic, Inc. and Disney Publishing Worldwide. She produced a new ELL (English language learning) prototype for Disney’s Global Continuity Group, and also completed comprehensive studies and strategic plans for entry into Greater China for Nickelodeon, Thomas & Friends (RC2), and Sesame Workshop.

From 1998 to 2002, Jenny was Assistant Vice President, Global Media & Marketing at Sesame Workshop, where she launched and managed five groundbreaking co-productions in Greater China, including Zhima Jie, the indigenous, Chinese version of Sesame Street. Jenny also had the added responsibility overseeing the global launch and business development of a new ELL property, Sesame English. This was Jenny’s second tenure with Sesame Workshop (a.k.a. CTW). Formerly, Jenny was Marketing Director in the Schools & Technology Group, helping to bring CTW’s television series (3-2-1 Contact, Square One TV, Ghostwriter) to PBS’ instructional television community and educators nationwide.

Jenny received a Bachelor of Science in Management & Marketing from NYU’s Stern Business School, and also attended college at Barnard, Columbia University. She is an active member of New York Women in Film & Television; and was a panel reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education, for its 2005 Ready to Learn Grant.

Kelly Schmitt, PhD

 

Dr. Kelly Schmitt is Senior Director at MCG. She is a research psychologist who specializes in applying child development findings to program development.

Kelly has directed research projects with children, parents, and teachers for
clients such as BBC Worldwide Americas, Nick Jr., Noggin, the American
Museum of Natural History and Sesame Workshop.

Susan Jessop

 

Susan Jessop is Director at MCG, and has worked in the field of applied and opinion research for more than 25 years. Her expertise lies in designing qualitative and quantitative research to inform strategic message development for companies, advocacy groups, political campaigns, and not-for-profit organizations. Susan manages the Michael Cohen Group’s European office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she has lived for eight years.

Prior to joining MCG, Susan was employed by KRC Research and at Applied Research and Consulting, where she worked on a wide range of domestic and international projects for political and corporate clients, with a particular emphasis in assisting political candidates and public affairs campaigns in message development.

Susan holds a BA in Government from Smith College where she focused on problems in democratic thought, contemporary political systems, and women’s studies. A native speaker of English, Susan is fluent in Dutch.

Jocelyn Kiley, MA

 

Jocelyn Kiley is a Director at MCG. A political scientist by training, she has expertise in designing and evaluating social science research methodologies.

Jocelyn has worked extensively with large-scale quantitative data sets and has experience in conceptualizing and measuring American public opinion and behavior, racial and ethnic issues, and the effects of media influence. Her work has included research on ethnic identity among black immigrant groups in the US, the framing of political messages by congressional elites, modeling increases in voter turnout in Presidential and Senatorial elections, the study of media influence on foreign policy around human rights and humanitarian issues, and the influences on attitudes and behaviors with respect to language and bilingual education in a recent series of multi-state ballot initiatives. Jocelyn has also designed experimental and survey protocols and taught several political science and mass communications courses, including research methods and introductory statistics, to undergraduates.

Jocelyn holds an MA in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She also has a background in Sociology and Anthropology and holds a BA in these disciplines from Harvard University. Jocelyn has a reading knowledge of French and a beginner's knowledge of American Sign Language.

Craig Rosen, PhD

 

Craig Rosen, program evaluation, statistics and psychology consultant to The Michael Cohen Group, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Stanford University School of Medicine. Craig’s unique combination of clinical, academic, and applied research experience have given him a psychotherapist’s understanding of human behavior, a scholar’s methodological sophistication, and a strategist’s focus on the “big picture” implications of research.

Craig is currently a Director of MCG’s Ready to Learn grant practice. For the past 15 years, he has worked with principals of MCG to evaluate educational media for children. He collaborated on formative and summative evaluations of Ghostwriter, 3-2-1 Contact!, and the Playhouse Disney programming block. He plays a lead role within MCG in designing and implementing scientific evaluations of projects funded by grants from the US Department of Education, including the $47 million Ready-To-Learn Partnership.

Dr. Rosen’s other area of academic research is evaluating quality and outcomes of mental health programs, especially services for veterans with post-traumatic stress. This work includes four randomized controlled trials testing telemedicine innovations in mental health, including telephone-based case management, psychotherapy conducted by video teleconferencing, and automated monitoring of patients’ progress via the Internet and interactive-voice-response telephone.

Craig received his BS in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University.

Giancarlo Mariutto

 

Gianacarlo Mariutto is a Research Associate on MCG’s Ready to Learn evaluation team. His experience in children's programming comes from his work at Nickelodeon Studios where he was a segment producer and writer for the sports news show, In Play Today. Giancarlo moved to New York City to work on the feature length documentary film The Killer Within. Prior to his work in New York, Giancarlo worked as a personal assistant to Kicking and Screaming Director Jesse Dylan in Los Angeles.

Giancarlo was educated at the University of Central Florida where he earned his BA in radio and television production.

Hyunju Kim

Hyunju Kim is a Production Assistant. At MCG.

Hyunju’s media experience began with her internship at Lee Daniels Entertainment, where she assisted film director/producer Lee Daniels and producers known for films such as Monster's Ball, The Woodsman and Shadowboxer. Most recently, she was production assistant at Court TV Networks, where she assisted producers of the program development team for primetime entertainment programming. Hyunju completed her undergraduate studies in film and television and journalism at New York University.

Betsy Crowell, EdM

Betsy is a part-time research coordinator at the Michael Cohen Group; she joined the firm in early 2007. She holds a EdM in Sociology and Education with a concentration in Education Policy from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also has an MS in Childhood Education from City College, CUNY and a BA in American Studies from Barnard College. She is a New York State certified educator and taught first grade in a public school in Harlem. Betsy is proficient in Spanish.

Frank Licato

Frank Licato, Director of Administration at MCG, has worked in the entertainment industry for the past 15 years. Before coming to the Michael Cohen Group, he was production coordinator at Word World where he produced an animated children’s television series aimed at developing literacy and pre-literacy skills among pre-schoolers. Prior to his tenure at Word World, Frank worked in advertising at EURO RSCG NY, producing radio spots for clients such as Evian, MCI and Volvo.

Frank is also a director and has directed many shows in New York including the off-Broadway productions of Rod Serling’s Requiem For A Heavyweight and Sam Shepard’s Seduced. He attended Emerson College in Boston where he studied theatre arts.

Desiree Whyte

Desiree joined MCG in 2006 as Director of Finance. Desiree (called “Dee”) specializes in the implementation of state-of-the-art accounting tools and procedures for entrepreneurial businesses. Her previous experience includes managing the financial operations for firms focused on international trade, manufacturing, distribution, graphic arts and law. Desiree received a BS degree in accounting from NYU.

Tina Lipkin

Tina Lipkin is Director of Field Operations at the Michael Cohen Group. She organizes and manages all aspects of field research and recruiting.

Prior to joining MCG, Tina was the founder and sole proprietor of Research Support, an independent qualitative field service. She brings nearly 20 years experience to MCG. She received a Masters Degree in Architecture from Columbia University.

June Bagshaw

As Director of MCG Canada, June coordinates field research for our Canadian clients. Before joining MCG, June was a Director of Cellestial Fuel Inc., an industrial research company based in Vancouver and Managing Partner of GnuMedia, Inc, a media and marketing firm. In this capacity she organized and oversaw large-scale, multi-year media and marketing projects in Canada, the United States and Eastern Europe.



GnuMedia’s clients included Deloitte & Touche Tohmatsu, the Sawyer Miller Group, the Government of Romania, and USAID, the United States Agency for International Development. June attended Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
